Ilia’s New Brow Products Are Go-Tos for Celebs Like Emily Blunt and Miranda Kerr

In the realm of celebrity beauty, I’m always intrigued by what stars put (or don’t put) on their brows. Having good brows is practically a requirement for being famous. While celebrities have access to the highest-caliber experts to pluck, thread, and microblade their brows, the products they use to enhance them are also of the utmost importance.

The latest brow products sweeping Hollywood? Ilia’s new launches. Despite only just launching, the In Full Micro-Tip Brow Pencil and In Frame Brow Gel are already making waves. So many celebrities, from Kate Hudson and Pamela Anderson to Gwyneth Paltrow and Kourtney Kardashian, are obsessed with the brand for its skincare-first ethos and clean yet effective formulas. ILIA’s new brow products are no different — made with nourishing ingredients such as hydrolyzed quinoa and provitamin B5 to maintain hair health.

In true Ilia fashion, these brow products help you get the vibe of your brows. The In Full Micro-Brow Pencil has a microtip to help you create the most realistic-looking hair-like strokes. It comes in eight shades and glides on easily but doesn’t smudge, so you get the best of both worlds. The In Frame Brow Gel is a flake-free formula that conditions brows while it adds flexible hold. There’s no doubt that these brow products will keep gaining momentum.

WATCH: How to Clean up Your Eyebrows at Home When You Can’t Go to the Salon

Even though salons are opened back up, a lot of us are busy with work, school, and home life so paying someone to get our brows together isn’t the focus for right now. But that doesn’t mean we want to walk around looking like a beast. So, we at BeautyLeeBar decided to handle things on our own and look for how to clean up eyebrows at home without going to the beauty salon.

We did a lot of research before we found some YouTube videos that were a winner for us. The beauty influencers demonstrate an easy step-by-step tutorial showing how to clean up your eyebrows at home easily. We couldn’t just keep this to ourselves so here’s what we learned…

How to clean up eyebrows at home:

You will need:

  • Facial touch-up razor (available in pharmacies, Walmart, Amazon, etc)
  • Tweezers
  • Slanted eyebrow pencil (optional)
  • Eyebrow brush or spoolie
  • A pair of scissors
  • Water spray

Steps:

1. It’s best to clean the area before you start tweezing, so wash your face first.

2. Brush your eyebrows upwards really well, until you start seeing your longer hairs.

3. If you don’t want your hair to be too long and you don’t like the bushy and messy look, use the scissors to trim the longer hairs you want to shorten, but do it very carefully.

Beauty Note: Avoid trimming your eyebrow at the tail, just the center, and front.

4. Use an eyebrow pencil to fill in any sparse areas. This is so you can determine your eyebrow shape and know the spots that shouldn’t approach when plucking your eyebrows.

5. Now brush the eyebrows again, but naturally this time.

6. Use the tweezers to remove any stray hairs that are far away from your brows and the area you defined.

7. Pull the skin, above your brow, upwards using your fingers. Very gently and carefully, trace the razor downwards to clean up any extra hairs or peach fuzz around your brows.

8. Seal your work with eyebrow gel to keep everything in place.

Primp Tip: Don’t forget to think about your brow’s natural shape, so you don’t try to tweeze it into something new entirely. This is not brow art, its brow shaping! Be cautious, careful, and restrained. Just clean up the bare minimums on the bottoms, where you see stray hairs.

What that means in practice: Take your tweezers and tweeze stray hairs beneath the brow. Make sure you’re pulling hair in the direction that it’s growing in. You want to take it out the way it comes in, or you can end up getting ingrown hairs.

Primp Tip: Once it’s done, lightly moisturize the brow area to calm the inflamed skin and rehydrate. Try a gentle facial oil like Josie Maran Mini 100 percent Pure Argan Oil, Tatcha GOLD CAMELLIA BEAUTY OIL Nourishing 23k Gold Oil, or a water-based moisturizer like Tatcha THE SILK CREAM Firming Hydration.

Be careful: Make sure you sterilize all these beauty tools before and after using them.

Beauty Q and A: What Is Microshading?

We’ve heard of microbladingmicro feathering, but recently another eyebrow tattoo option has made its way onto our radar and that’s microshading. When it comes to permanent makeup, doing your research before getting anything done is non-negotiable. So, if you’re curious whether microshading is for you, keep reading. We tapped professional brow expert Joey Healy to learn more about this eyebrow procedure and how it differs from microblading.

What Is Microshading?

According to Healy, microshading is often referred to as ombré or powder brows and looks like a more fuller-looking brow. It utilizes a fine tattoo pen to create tiny dots as opposed to microblading, which creates short strokes. “ With microshading, you can change the density pattern depending on how close or far away those dots are,” says Healy. “ The closer together the dots are, the darker the result is. It’s very much like an impressionist painting, which is the best way to think of it.”

Who’s a Good Candidate for Microshading?

“ Microshading is thought to be better for those with sensitive or oily skin,” says Healy. That’s because the pigment is applied as individual dots as opposed to strokes which is a bit more gentle and distributes the pigment in a concentrated area making it last a little bit longer. Healy also explains that if you like fuller-looking brows, microshading might be worth considering. “ The thing about microshading is that it’s a little bit darker,” he says. “ It’s a little bit more of that Instagram kind of brow.”

How Long Does Microshading Last?

Touch-ups are generally recommended every eight to 12 months. Healy explains that it lasts longer than microblading with fewer touch-ups, but everyone is different, so it’s important to take your skin type and needs into consideration and consult with your brow technician about aftercare.

Can You Create a Microshaded-Like Look at Home?

If you like the idea of microshading but are nervous about the commitment, rest assured you can recreate the look using powder brow products at home.

“ If you want to do microshading, use a brow powder and concentrate it on the areas you want it the most,” says Healy. If you need a product recommendation, the Joey Healy Luxe Brow Powder and the Duo Brow Brush make it easy to achieve soft and natural-looking brows. For a drugstore pick, we like the Maybelline New York Tattoo Brow 36HR Pigment Pencil, which comes in an easy-to-use-pencil.

Once you have your product of choice, it’s time to create your shadow. “ I always recommend doing very little in the front so the brow isn’t boxed in,” says Healy. “ Then, I suggest doing a little bit more towards the arch and the tail to give a little bit more definition and that kind of ombre effect.”

How to Groom Your EYEBROWS AT HOME

Before you grab your tweezers and go ham plucking away at stray hairs in hopes to reshape and define your brows—there are some tips to keep in mind. Since seeing a professional isn’t an option at the moment, DIY is the next best method to get your brows in tip-top (OK, decent) shape. To guide you through this time, we are here to share our expertise on grooming your brows at home. Learn simple guidelines below.

Tip 1: Find your Golden Ratio.

While the proportion known as the Golden Mean has always existed in mathematics and in the physical universe, it is unknown exactly when it was first discovered and applied by mankind. It is reasonable to assume that it has perhaps been discovered and rediscovered throughout history, which explains why it goes under several names. It appears that the Egyptians may have used both pi and phi in the design of the Great Pyramids. The Greeks are thought by some to have based the design of the Parthenon on this proportion, but this is subject to some conjecture

Anyways, for the beauty world, Anastasia recognized that this mathematical principle of thirds, known more modernly as the Golden Ratio, could influence not only centuries of art and architecture, but could be applied directly to the human face to create aesthetic harmony. Believing that brows should be shaped according to an individual’s bone structure, Anastasia developed a formula for the Golden Ratio’s application.

She created this patented method to determine where your brows should begin, arch, and end according to your bone structure. Using these three marks will help you to groom your brows to create better balance and symmetry.

How to find your Golden Ratio:

1) Your first mark will be where your brows should begin, which is directly above the center of the nostril.
2) Next, you will mark where the brow should end. Align the bottom outside corner of the nose with the outside of the eye.
3) Lastly, you will mark the highest point of the brow. This mark is from the center of the tip of the nose through the center of the iris.

Tip 2: Try using a stencil as a guide.

Lightly filling your brows with a stencil before grooming will create a guideline to help keep brows symmetrical when touching them up.

Tip 3: Have the right tools.

Make sure you have good quality tweezers and/or scissors to groom with. Dull tweezers and scissors can cause more painful grooming and can irritate the skin. Tweezers and scissors should be sharp and should close completely without any gaps between the points.

Tip 4: Care for your skin after grooming.

Using a hydrating oil on the skin after grooming will help calm and soothe the skin, avoiding irritation and ingrown hairs.
